'They Took Care of Him," Daughter Says of Dad After Mom's Passing
Daughter Vicki Cupp knows her dad, Daniel, is in the perfect place.
"They’re beautiful facilities," Vicki says about The Grove at Canopy in Tallahassee, where her dad lives. "Walking around and just talking to the staff - and looking at the residents and how happy they are - it’s not only what is aesthetically nice and how nice the outside looks, but how it feels."
On her regular visits, Vicki takes in the tranquility of the community.
"Anytime you’re in this community, it just really feels like a home. They make the family members feel like it’s their home when they come to visit the residents. It’s just the feeling you get, and my mom and dad felt it from the first time they visited," she said.
One aspect of her dad's life at Starling stands out for Vicki, and she treasures it immensley.
"What’s even better is how they took care of him after [my mom] passed away. That’s important. And they surrounded him, and they still surround him, and it means a lot to a family," she said.
more'We are Very Grateful' for Starling Community, Daughter Says
Neil Maslen enjoys life at Starling at Nocatee Assisted Living and Memory Care.
"He was one of the very first residents," said daughter Erica Moore. "So we’re talking about six, almost seven years ago he’s been here."
The best part? For Neil, it's those around him!
"Oh the people," he said. "It’s just being alone versus this. No question being with people. Many people. More friends than I ever had!"
As Father's Day approaches, Erica is thankful her dad is surrounded by love.
"You ask him, would he want to be anywhere else ... no way!" Erica said. "He may have been hesitant in the beginning, but as he just stated, he has made so many friends."
Neil couldn't agree more.
"It has not been an unhappy time. It has been a very good time," he said.
Erica shares the feeling.
"He has been really, really fortunate. We are very grateful, like I said, to the community that Starling has generated for my dad and for others. I’m very, very appreciative of the staff, and whenever I’ve had any kind of issue or concern or whatever, they are spot on. And I appreciate them for that immensely," Erica said.
more'It Has Just Been so Great,' Family says of The Grove at Canopy
The Ford family has a soft spot for Starling.
"We visited a couple of other facilities [when looking for the right place for mom and dad], and when mom walked into the front door of the Grove, she said 'this is it!'" Annie Ford explained.
Both of her parents live at The Grove at Canopy in Tallahassee.
"It has just been so great," Annie said. "It’s been a really easy transition for them and they’ve made so many friends here. It’s unbelievable. And the comment we get is why didn’t we do this any sooner."
The Fords love their apartment, and spend their days socializing with friends. For their children, the best part is knowing mom and dad are always around great people.
"It’s fantastic for me just knowing they’re in a place surrounded with people that they have a good time with, compared to where they were before out in rural South Dakota, where they had a good neighbor, but still kinda a long ways from anything," son Chris Ford said.
Chris takes solace knowing his parents have round-the-clock care and assistance should they need it.

moreNocatee ranked “Best Place to Raise a Family in Florida”
The results are in, and Nocatee is a big winner!
According to Niche, Nocatee was rated as the No. 1 place to raise a family in the state of Florida.
To rank neighborhoods in each state and country across the country, Niche says they “collected and analyzed dozens of rankings factors from federal and local government datasets.”
Niche grades neighborhoods on categories like crime and safety, schools, housing, outdoor activities, cost of living and diversity.
There are several positive reviews in the survey, but this one really stuck out to us:
“I just moved to Nocatee about a year ago, and I fell in love with it! It’s a community with different, smaller sub-communities within it, and everyone that lives here is extremely friendly and welcoming. By living here, you gain access to many of its amenities, such as the gym, tennis, pickle ball & volleyball courts, and even the waterpark! You also are allowed to attend Nocatee’s exclusive events, such as Food Truck Friday Night! Overall, Nocatee has many things to do for everyone of all ages, and it’s as if every day is a vacation!”
moreLucy Dixon Promoted to New 'VP of People and Culture' Role
Starling is proud to announce the promotion of Lucy Dixon to vice president of people and culture, a new role at the senior living company focused on employee engagement and well-being.
"Our organization is driven by people," said Starling Chief Operating Officer Megan Kennedy. "Lucy has helped us to create a workplace where our team members feel valued and appreciated. She's a true, inspirational leader, and has focused on keeping our employees engaged."
Since 2022, Lucy has served as Starling's regional memory care director.
"I think the title of People and Culture is so fitting because I make sure that all of the team members feel welcomed," she said. "I make sure that they are well-trained. I make sure that they understand the job description and I make sure they understand that we’re here for them."
Lucy explains why it's important to lead a dynamic, yet compassionate team.
"We’re here as an ear - an open ear to listen to whatever is going on in your life, to vent to, to confide in. That means we have to be here for our team members so they’re here for our residents."
moreHow often should you visit your elderly parents?
When a parent goes into senior or assisted living, their child often wonders how often they should visit mom or dad.
It's an important question in order to maintain a strong bond between parent and child. Life and social commitments can get in the way, making weekly visits difficult.
Most experts have differing opinions.
Some agree that weekly visits are important, but that often depends on how close parent-child live from one another.
Others think monthly or bi-yearly visits suffice.
At Starling, we understand it simply boils down to the bond and the ease at which visits can happen.
A 2021 New York Times article on visiting your aging parents suggests bringing a to-do list to the visits.
"During quarantine, medical, financial and household issues may have cropped up. Preparing before your visit can ease tensions and get to what you really want — a joyful visit," the article says.
moreStarling Chef's Love for Cooking Extends to His Small Seasonings Business
Kevin Rasberry knows it's important to put your heart and soul into what you make in the kitchen. As executive chef at The Grove at Trelago, he always strives to make a memorable meal for the community's residents. That desire continues when he's off the clock, but in a much different way.
For more than a year, Kevin has operated Momma Jean's Seasonings, a small business that provides all sorts of seasonings to spice up everyday meals.
"It’s named after my mom," Kevin says. "My mom is kinda the reason I got into cooking and culinary school."
While he loves being in the kitchen and whipping up new concoctions, Kevin never imagined he'd be a small business owner.
"This never was my intention to start my own business. But with culinary school and working in various kitchens, we’d just create seasonings for ourselves to throw on particular foods," he said. "Over time, friends and family said, 'hey, you should put this out! You should put this out!' I was like 'nah, I just do this for the love.' Then one thing led to another and now we’re here today!"
When Kevin began experimenting, he started with a dozen seasonings. Now, his company sells at least 24 - and more are coming! He hopes to have seven new flavors ready by summer 2023.
moreNew Executive Director 'Ready for Challenge'
A new year means new beginnings at Starling at Nocatee Independent Living. Executive Director Charles Gomes has been on the job just a few months, but is already fitting in quite well.
"This is brand new for me! My prior career has been spent mostly in higher education as a director of athletics," he said. "This is a new venture for me, but there are a lot of similarities between the two roles."
He explains how his past position goes hand-in-hand with his new role leading an independent living community.
HEAR FROM CHARLES HERE!
"You first go, 'athletic director - that has nothing to do with this type of profession,' but when you start to look at the job duties, there are a lot of similarities," he said. "Things like our facilities, finances, responding to resident requests, being responsible for a population of people and ensuring at the end of the day they all have an amazing experience. I think those are the common threads that exist between both positions. As someone who’s accustomed to dealing with young people, we actually have a lot of young people on our staff - that are servers in our dining room in the bistro area - so it's great. I have the younger population, then the older population as well as our older residents, so it kinda satisfies both of those needs I’ve had in my past work experiences."
moreWhat Age do Most Seniors Enter Assisted Living?
It's a question on a lot of people's minds as they get older: At what age should I, or my loved one, move into a senior living or assisted living facility?
According to AARP, seven in 10 people over the age of 65 will need some form of long-term care - and that often means moving into a senior living facility.
Studies show most people make the move from about 75 to 85 years old, depending on their health, financial situation and other factors.
At Starling, we understand this and provide the best care possible for those making the life changing move.
"Assisted living facilities provide care and supervision for older adults who can no longer live on their own but do not need the level of personal or medical care found at a nursing home," AARP says. In the U.S., there are about a million beds in assisted living facilities, AARP's website says.
In addition, assisted living facilities are a great way for seniors to stay active. At Starling, our assisted living communities provide extensive services like wellness programs, activities, meals and regular outings. And they're a great place to make new friends!

"I lived down there for about nine years. And everything was perfectly okay there except a hurricane called Hurricane Ian came along, and when that happened, of course it destroyed a lot of things including where I lived."
Ray says there was damage and debris everywhere.
"The flood itself got into the house. Mud. It was a disaster. I lost my car due to the flood. It was bad news!"
He knew something had to change.
"I knew right away this was something I wasn’t about to take along at my age. So I called my son and he came and got me."
Shortly after that, Ray moved into Starling at Nocatee Independent Living.
"I’ve been here since last November. I came here, and now I walk to the gym. I don’t have a car now. It’s quite a walk to the gym and I go to the gym every day and I ride the bike."
Ray credits Starling for helping him get back on track, and making huge strides in his physical health.
"Here at Starling I faithfully ride that bike 10 miles every day. So I feel like Starling’s kind of bringing me back to life. And I like the place. And the people are wonderful. It’s a good place for me and so a lot of people express sympathy about the fact I lost my place down there. And to be honest about it I have no regrets. I just smile about it and say you can’t unring the bell. It’s done. I’m glad to be here!"

moreDaughter Reflects on Mom's Care During Hurricane Ian: 'They Did Amazing'
To Susan Montanez, the thought of her mom, Barbara, leaving home and moving into an assisted living community was a scary prospect. She was concerned her mom would lose her freedom and independence.
But that all changed the moment she stepped foot in The Grove at Trelago.
"When I set up the tour and I walked in, I just felt such a warm and compassionate feeling immediately coming in," she said.
Susan was in awe at the brand new community in Maitland.
"When I looked around and toured the actual facility and a model room, I just knew this was the place for my mom. The attention to every detail, all of the activities. And the residents all were smiling, and you could see they really enjoyed living there," she said.
In September 2022, just four months into her mom's stay at The Grove at Trelago, Hurricane Ian approached Florida.
As the massive storm bore down on the state - with major effects expected in the Orlando area - Susan was concerned for her mom. But, those concerns quickly subsided.
"When I went that Wednesday to see her in the morning before the storm was coming over to us, we talked about it. We reviewed the fact they have a generator, food, everything else, and I said 'mom you're in a much better position here then staying with me especially if I lost power,'" Susan explained. "The residents were all very calm. There were a lot of staff. I felt very comfortable."

Lucy Dixon has been with Starling for a mere eight months, but has already made a world of difference.
Starling recently promoted Lucy to Regional Memory Care Director, a responsibility she doesn't take lightly.
"The person has to have passion for what they do for the resident," she said. "So, taking time to actually try and figure out what's going on with that person, knowing the resident, knowing their life story, knowing what they used to do, their favorite food. And trying to figure out how to tailor their care to that person."
Lucy enjoys her team, the residents and the challenges that come with her position.
"It's the joy of the job because I enjoy trying to figure out what puzzle piece to put here, what to do there," Lucy said. "Or how can I better a resident's care."
Every resident is different, with different needs, and Lucy understands her number one priority is making sure they each receive the highest quality care.
"I think that's the main thing we offer - that neighborhood, home-like family for anyone who's coming in," Lucy said.
Lucy credits Starling with allowing her to provide top-notch care - all while working in an enjoyable and friendly environment.

"That pool - that was a big draw. I love the staff. They're wonderful. I love the kids who wait on us. They know our names. I don't know how they do it because there are so many people here, but they're great! I love the activities. So many things to do," she said.

"It's important to feel comfortable that she's in a place where she's being cared for, where there's activities, stuff to do," he said. "She obviously has a great social life. I'll call her to do things sometimes and she already has plans. I know they watch out for her. The staff does and the residents do themselves. So it's very comforting."

Because of this, we are happy to announce that in the next two weeks, there will be clinics for all properties. January 13, January 19, and January 21 are our first rounds. We then will have a second clinic 21 days later, and a third 21 days later.
We believe the vaccine will help us keep up with our commitment to the health and safety for all residents. According to the CDC, it’s very important for healthcare personnel and residents of long-term care facilities to be vaccinated.
The COVID-19 vaccine is being released by federal, state, and local health authorities. Because COVID-19 is a new disease with new vaccines, you may have questions about what happens before, during, and after your appointment to get vaccinated.

Our Starling team partnered with K9s for Warriors to bring the residents of Starling at Nocatee Assisted Living and Memory Care this exciting event, “Doggie in the Window.”
On a beautiful September afternoon in Ponte Vedra, Florida, Veterans and trainers with K9s for Warriors spent quality time with our seniors, putting a smile on their faces. While they only visited through the window, it was wonderful for the dogs to spread some cheer and to continue their training in that environment.
Many of the Starling residents are Veterans themselves, and we are proud to support K9s for Warriors. September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness month, and it is an honor for the Starling team to partner with an organization that works to reduce post-traumatic stress of those who have served and fought for our country.

moreUpdate on Visitation (9/2/2020)
UPDATE (9/2/2020) - The Governor's Order is now final and we are following all contents of the letter below...
Dear Starling Families,
The Task Force on the Safe and Limited Reopening of Long-Term Care Facilities recently approved a series of resident visitation recommendations that now await approval from Governor DeSantis. Currently, we anticipate the Task Force’s recommendations will be approved in whole or part. Assuming the governor approves the recommendations, we anticipate new visitation guidelines will soon be implemented through a modification to the current Executive Order which is set to expire September 5, 2020.
Assuming the governor approves the Task Force’s recommendations in whole, controlled visitation will be permitted within two visitation categories: (1) Essential Caregivers and (2) General Visitors. Based on our Facilities’ capacity to carry out such recommendations in a safe and controlled manner, we have outlined our interpretation and planned implementation of these new visitation guidelines for your review.
Note these guidelines are not yet in effect and may change based on the final Governor’s Order. We will continue to update you as more information becomes available.

Dana Levine and her husband are assisted living residents at Starling at San Jose. She recently sat down for an interview, to share her experience living in the community. Dana spoke about the beautiful grounds, the fun activities that she participates in with her friends, and the wonderful food she enjoys everyday. However, she wanted to make sure to share a story about the care she receives at Starling at San Jose.
Dana says after a recent doctor appointment she came back home to Starling at San Jose. She wasn’t feeling very well and during dinner in her room with her husband, who has memory loss, she felt the urgent need to lie down. She says the caregiver came in to check on them and saw that Dana was asleep and her husband needed assistance. Dana says that’s when the caregiver immediately helped her husband get ready for bed and she began cleaning up dinner. Dana heard the caregiver as she was tidying up the room and Dana said, “I didn’t even know you were here.” The caregiver replied, “well, you needed me.”
Dana says that’s the best part about Starling at San Jose; the entire staff is caring, friendly, and they all work hard to keep them engaged during these difficult times. She says she knew Mother’s Day would be difficult this year, because she would have to keep a safe distance from her family during this global pandemic. However, the Starling at San Jose staff organized a wonderful car parade. The families decorated their vehicles and drove through the parking lot to see the residents. Dana says, “that just made everything okay, to see our children and all of us laughing.”
moreDoctor Visits & COVID-19
Lucie Content
Visiting your doctor during this pandemic might be alarming for seniors and people with underlying health issues. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends following these steps to protect yourself and others:
- If you think you have COVID-19, notify the doctor or healthcare provider before your visit and follow their instructions.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when you have to go out in public.
- Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Stay at least 6 feet away from others while inside and in lines.
- When paying, use touch-less payment methods if possible. If you cannot use touch-less payment, sanitize your hands after paying with card, cash, or check. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when you get home.
Many seniors take medications daily and the CDC recommends limiting in-person visits to the pharmacy:
- Plan to order and pick up all your prescriptions at the same time.
- If possible, call prescription orders in ahead of time. Use drive-thru windows, curbside services (wait in your car until the prescription is ready), mail-order, or other delivery services. Do the same for pet medicine.
- Check with your doctor and pharmacist to see if you can get a larger supply of your medicines so you do not have to visit the pharmacy as often.

STARLING’S CONTINUED RESPONSE TO COVID-19

Cases of COVID-19 continue to rise around the country and the virus has created new challenges for everyone. All of the caregivers at Starling are continuing to adapt, providing the best care. The health of the residents is the top priority of the entire staff. Their goal is to make sure everyone is safe, while they enjoy the luxurious Starling communities and all of the wonderful amenities.
The staff at Starling treat the residents like members of their own family. Chris Ingold, the Executive Director of Starling at San Jose says they follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines. One change quickly implemented was ending communal dining. “I tell you it takes a village…it is a huge undertaking when we deliver meals three times a day, to make sure they are hot, they are fresh, and the whole staff participates,” explains Chris.
Plus, the caregiver’s dedication to keeping the residents healthy doesn’t stop there. “We take them to their doctors appointments. I actually give them an N95 mask to wear versus the masks that we just have in the building. So they are well protected when they have to go out.” Chris knows it is also important to keep all the residents happy and enjoying the company of others, so they make sure to plan socially distanced activities. “The staff really loves our residents and the residents love them. We try to build more of a home atmosphere. It's just not a job, it is something that we love to do.”

This global pandemic has caused a lot of people to think about what they can control, when there are so many unknowns. Whether you are a resident at one of Starling’s luxurious communities or your loved one is, a great way to stay focused and healthy is to try to eat well.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working to eliminate some preventable chronic diseases that impact the lives of many Americans. The CDC says, “Good nutrition is essential for keeping Americans healthy across their lifespan.” Researchers state, “Adults who eat a healthy diet live longer and have a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Healthy eating can help people with chronic diseases manage these conditions and prevent complications.”
What can you do to boost your immune system? Nutritionists recommend eating fresh berries, citrus fruits, or fresh vegetables like spinach, bell peppers, and broccoli. It is also important to remember the immune boosting benefits of green tea, garlic, and ginger. Avoiding processed foods full of sodium is critical for most older adults. The CDC explains, “Excess sodium can increase your blood pressure and your risk for heart disease and stroke. Together, heart disease and stroke kill more Americans each year than any other cause.”

She came to this realization at an early age when she watched loved ones suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. She says being raised around seniors helped cultivate a respect and love for an older generation, and it is a privilege to work as the Memory Care Director at The Grove at Canopy.
Sameka has worked in memory care for over 19 years and she says the community at The Grove at Canopy is what sets them apart. She explains, of course the property is luxurious and the amenities are wonderful, but the staff and the residents feel like they are part of a family. Sameka says it doesn’t matter if the residents live in independent living, assisted living or memory care, they all feel connected. Her staff always puts the residents first and she tells them, “this is their home and we are here to serve them in their home.”
Sameka knows this year has brought many new challenges when caring for seniors. Especially when the families cannot visit. “You know we just have to keep them engaged,” says Sameka. “That’s the most important thing, just keeping them engaged, keeping them busy, keeping them focused on the positive.” She emphasizes, they’ve come up with new creative ways to enrich the resident’s days: socially distanced ice cream socials and musicians playing by their windows.

Marcia loves the community at The Grove at Canopy, because the staff has created an experience for the residents that she’s never seen before. “It’s really a family and we are bonded.”

What can I do to make you have a happy moment?” She says the global pandemic has created new challenges, and she takes extreme precautions when it comes to the residents safety. “You have to make sure you live your life, knowing that you are living someone else's life too. moreWhat Is "Social Distancing" & How Does It Work?
Lucie Content
By now, you’ve probably heard of the term “social distancing” … but what exactly does that mean?
Social distancing, also known as “physical distancing,” means keeping space between yourself and people outside your home.
In order to practice proper social distancing, The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention recommends you follow these three main steps:
- Stay at least 6 feet from other people
- Do not gather in large groups
- Stay out of crowded places and avoid mass gatherings
On top of the everyday steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the CDC says keeping space between you and others is one of the best tools to avoid exposure to the virus.
The CDC also recommends you limit close contact with others outside your house. Since people can spread the virus before they know they’re sick, it’s important to stay away from others when possible.
WHY PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING?
According to the CDC, COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with others with a prolonged period of time.
Spread can happen when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks, and droplets from their mouth or nose are launched into the air.

moreEveryday steps to help clean and disinfect your home
Lucie Content
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has put together an extensive list of tips to help you clean and disinfect your home.
One piece of advice that sticks out in all of the categories is to wear disposable gloves when cleaning or disinfecting.
CLEAN
Clean surfaces often by using hot, soapy water. Practice “routine cleaning” of frequently-touched surfaces, like tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, sinks, etc.
DISINFECT
Clean the area or item with soap and water or another detergent if it is dirty. Then, use a household disinfectant.
Follow the instructions on the label to ensure safe and effective use of the product. Many products recommend keeping surface wet for a period of time (see product label). A lot of products also recommend precautions such as wearing gloves and making sure you have good ventilation during use of the product.

Work or engage in schooling from home whenever possible.
If you work in a critical infrastructure industry, you have a special responsibility to maintain normal work schedule. You and your employer should follow CDC guidance to protect your health.
Avoid social gatherings in groups of more than 10 people.
Avoid eating or drinking at bars, restaurants and food courts. Use drive-thru, pickup or delivery options.
Avoid discretionary travel, shopping trips and social visits.
Practice good hygiene:
- Wash your hands frequently with hot, soapy water
- Avoid touching your face
- Sneeze or cough into a tissue or the inside of your elbow
- Disinfect frequently-used items and surfaces as much as possible
CDC recommendations regarding cloth face coverings
Lucie Content
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to study the spread and effects of Coronavirus across the United States.
According to recent students, a significant number of people with Coronavirus are asymptomatic. On top of that, people who eventually develop symptoms can transmit the virus to others before showing symptoms.
In light of this new evidence, the CDC is recommending wearing a cloth face covering in public settings, in addition to other social distancing measures.
The cloth face covering could slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.
Cloth face coverings can be made at home from common materials at a low cost.
NOTE: The cloth face coverings recommended here are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must be reserved for health care workers and other medical professionals.

What is a novel Coronavirus?
A novel coronavirus is a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified. The virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is not the same as the coronaviruses that commonly circulate among humans and cause mild illness, like the common cold.
A diagnosis with coronavirus 229E, NL63, OC43, or HKU1 is not the same as a COVID-19 diagnosis. Patients with COVID-19 will be evaluated and cared for differently than patients with common coronavirus diagnosis.
Why is the disease called coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19?
On February 11, 2020 the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease that is causing the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak, first identified in Wuhan China. The new name of this disease is coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated as COVID-19. In COVID-19, ‘CO’ stands for ‘corona,’ ‘VI’ for ‘virus,’ and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as “2019 novel coronavirus” or “2019-nCoV”.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person (between people who are in close contact with one another, within about 6 feet).
The virus is also thought to spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
Clean your hands often
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Growing up in northwest Ohio, Kelly McCartney discovered her calling at an early age to work with senior citizens.
A native of Van Buren, Ohio, her grandparents were her rock. However, when McCartney was in fourth grade doctors said her grandmother was experiencing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and the disease was slowly stripping away her mental and cognitive abilities.
Then, her grandfather was dealt an equally unfortunate hand with a dementia diagnosis.
From that life experience McCartney knew she wanted to help seniors living with diseases that impact the brain and memory just like her grandparents endured.
“From an early age I felt called to this field,” said McCartney, the Memory Care Director at Starling’s Nocatee community in Ponte Vedra, Florida.
Memory care is specifically designed for residents who have Alzheimer’s or dementia. It provides a nurturing environment with precautionary safety measures that allow family members to trust their loved ones have the best care possible.
McCartney knew right away, the environment and care provided by the caregivers at Nocatee – the area’s premier senior-living community – was right where she needed to be.

As the Memory Care Director at The Grove at Canopy, Tallahassee’s newest upscale senior living community, Green is attentive and has a warm personality. She also has a remarkable attention to detail, knowing one of her main objectives is to find activities that bring joy to the 12 plus residents she works hands-on with every day. She takes into consideration that they are impacted by the degenerative progression of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
“I make sure each resident receives the best care possible based upon their individual level of care needs,” said the 36-year-old Green, who has worked with senior citizens for 19 years now. “To see them smiling is very rewarding for me.” Every community member responds well to different activities. They all have different levels of cognitive ability.
To most, it would be a challenge to take on such an important job. Green is trusted by family members to take the best care possible of their parent. She’s turned this sometimes emotionally-draining endeavor into something that is her life’s passion.
moreThe Benefits of Choosing Independent Living

A good way to think of independent living for senior adults is having the freedom and convenience to put your time to better use.
Independent living comes with all the amenities and luxury of an all-inclusive vacation. For those 55-and-older who chose this lifestyle, they’re able to say goodbye to many of the chores and responsibilities that previously took up so many hours.
If you become a resident in an upscale independent living community, the days of going in circles cutting grass, changing light bulbs, cooking dinner and doing laundry will all be a thing of the past.
Tasks such as washing clothes, cleaning floors, vacuuming and routine maintenance will no longer cut into your precious time when you could be making new friends with people in the same age bracket who also have similar interests.
Instead of preparing meals, you could be playing cards, taking in happy hour, working on your golf game and – for the ladies – treating yourself to a manicure and pedicure.
Independent living, like what is offer with Starling’s three senior-living communities, allows you to check out of the routines that consumed so much time when working and raising a family. Instead, you can focus on your own interests in a safe and friendly environment.

Having a parent who is beginning to show the signs of deteriorating health can turn into an extremely stressful situation. You instinctively want the best for them, but slowly your involvement in their caretaking becomes the center of your life, making your own personal responsibilities and relationships take a back seat.
In a perfect world, mom or dad would be able to stay in their own home where so many memories were made. However, the reality is that new living arrangements with enhanced care is often the only option that can keep up with your parent’s changing medical and caretaking needs.
Once you make the decision to enlist assisted living or memory care for your parent, it’s completely normal to experience feelings of guilt.
When wading through this emotional decision, it’s important to remove the personal burden and feelings of inadequacy. Your parent would not want to feel like they are encumbering their children’s lives. If you are unable to care for yourself, it will become impossible to stay on top of where your parent is with regards to their health.
A useful analogy to make this point is that of an oxygen mask on an airplane. If you neglect taking a breath of oxygen from the mask, you will be unable to assist your child with their own mask, due to your own oxygen depletion.
moreHome Healthcare Or Assisted Living For Your Loved One?

Making sure your senior-citizen parent has adequate care can be an arduous task. Discussing enhanced care or senior-living options can be difficult when they’ve taken care of themselves for their entire adult life.
Your parent may say they have everything under control. However, you’ve noticed the opposite. Their hygiene declines. Falls happen regularly. Bills go unpaid. Nutritional needs are neglected. Driving becomes increasingly difficult.
As a child, a nurturing instinct kicks in to make sure your parent is happy and healthy.
Once you see their health and/or cognitive abilities start to decline, it’s imperative to look at the best options to ensure your loved one is taken care of going forward.
While it may seem more economical and easier to get your parent to go along with home healthcare, it’s not necessarily the most cost-efficient option.
Modern assisted-living communities cover all aspects of residents’ needs, ranging from a spacious apartment, healthy meals and snacks, and regular activity and socialization that many senior citizens are lacking while still living alone.
Just as important, they also have medical professionals on staff to make sure there is a plan in place to stay in front of any pre-existing conditions, administer medications and keep an eye on their welfare to watch for any further decline in physical or mental capabilities.
moreWhy Independent Living Communities Are Becoming More Appealing

More and more senior adults are tapping into the privilege that an independent living community has to offer for those 55 and over. And as the United States population continues to get older and baby boomers are reaching retirement age, this segment of the population wants a place to enjoy their golden years in solidarity with other like-minded people who enjoy an active and robust living experience.
Independent living communities are becoming a more appealing option for the 26 percent of the US population that is over 55. Independent living also comes as a comfort for couples when one person may need a little assistance with care. Independent living communities provide residents with the freedom to come and go as they please, but entails a much-desired element of camaraderie, especially beneficial for those who were previously living alone and less likely to be regularly interacting with others.
It is important to note the distinction between independent living and assisted living communities. At assisted living communities, residents have the option to receive more hands-on care to conduct day-to-day activities. Independent living is a maintenance-free, amenity-rich environment for those who desire a less-invasive lifestyle than traditional in-home services may provide.
